Are you experiencing a slow-loading admin area on your WordPress website? This could be very frustrating for webmasters and developers.
A slow-loading admin area can cause issues when publishing a new blog, updating a plugin, or managing other website settings. In other words, your WordPress admin’s slow response can hamper your productivity.
Fortunately, there are some solutions to fix this issue on your WordPress website. In this blog post, I’ve shared some common reasons for the slowness of your WordPress website’s admin area and the solutions to repair/fix them.
Let’s start.
#1 Too many plugins
We all know that a WordPress website requires several plugins to run and render its required features. But sometimes, you or your website developer may get overwhelmed with dozens of plugins, some of which may need to be more helpful or non-working.
How to fix/repair:
Take some time to review all your website’s plugins and try to minimize them. Remove the plugins that you no longer need. If there are multiple plugins for one purpose, it would be a good idea to use one only.
Let me share a case study with you.
One of my client’s websites was loading too slowly, and after trying everything, he contacted me. My team and I noticed his website was using two plugins for Facebook Pixel, and at the same time, Facebook pixel scripts were also being used in a header and footer code management plugin.
What does this mean?
The website was rendering the Facebook pixel code three times. We removed some of the other additional plugins that were not required and enhanced the loading speed of their website and the admin area.
Tip: Disable all the plugins to see if the admin area is loading fine. If it is, activate all the plugins individually and check after each activation to see if the admin area is still loading well. This will help you identify the faulty plugin.
#2 Overloaded server
One of the most common reasons for a WordPress admin area’s slowness is the server. When your website server needs more CPU allocation, memory, or bandwidth for your WordPress admin to load and work well, you may experience slowness.
How to fix/repair:
Contact your web hosting provider to increase the memory or bandwidth of your website server. Upgrading the server should usually resolve the issue.
#3 Unoptimized database
The unoptimized database can also cause the slowness of the admin area of a WordPress website it may be using. Over time, the database can become bloated with unnecessary data such as spam comments, drafts, etc.
How to fix/repair:
Review your database periodically and optimize it with a plugin like WP-Optimize or Advanced Database Cleaner. If you need help optimizing your database, consult a professional WordPress developer for website optimization.
#4 Heavy theme
Using a heavy theme can also be one reason a WordPress website’s admin area needs to be faster.
How to fix/repair:
Although hundreds of beautiful and professional themes are available to build a WordPress website, one must choose a lightweight theme.
How to choose a suitable theme for your website?
- Check reviews of the theme developer.
- View their demo version.
- Check the theme’s demo version on an online tool like GTMetrix or Pingdom
Tip: To check whether you have a faulty theme, try switching to a default plugin like “Twenty Twenty” and see if the slowness of your admin area improves.
#5 Outdated PHP version
The PHP version plays a vital role in the performance of WordPress websites. If your website’s admin area loads slowly, your server’s PHP version may need to be updated.
How to fix/repair:
You can update the PHP version of your server through the control panel. If you are unsure about checking and upgrading the PHP version on your server, you can also contact your web hosting support or WordPress developer.
