Are you redesigning your WordPress website or planning to do so soon? In this blog post, I’ve shared some of the important steps that you must follow to revamp your website efficiently.
#1 Backup your existing website
The very first while revamping your website is to take the full backup (including files, folders, and database) of your existing website. This is to make sure that you can restore your fully functional website just in case you need to do so.
#2 Create a new WordPress setup
Next, you can install a fresh WordPress setup on a new server or your existing server but on a different location than the current website.
#3 Install and set a new theme
After you install the new WordPress setup, the next step is to install & activate your new theme. You can find hundreds of WordPress themes on Themeforst.net. Once you install the theme, you can import the demo data so that your website’s structure is in place and the design of your website looks good.
#4 Install plugins & import their data
After you install the new WordPress theme and import the demo data, the next step then is to install the same plugins that you have on your live/existing website. Not only install the plugin, but you must also import the plugin data if they allow it. Hire a web developer if you are not sure about this step.
#5 Export data (posts, pages, etc.)
Now is the time to export all your important data which could be the posts, pages, FAQs, products, etc. WordPress offers an easy & effective way to export all the data.
All you have to do is Go to WordPress dashboard > Tools > Export > Choose All Content and then click the “Download Export File” button. This step will download all the data from your existing website in the form of an XML file.
#6 Import data
The next step is to import the exported XML file to your new website. This is an extremely important step in the website redesign process.
To import the data, you need to go to the WordPress dashboard > Tools > Import and then click the “Run Importer” link under the “WordPress” option. Here, you can upload the exported file that you downloaded from your existing website.
#6 Check web pages and fix their designs
In most cases of website redesign, after the data is imported, you need to fix the design of some web pages or elements to make sure they look good. Now this is the step where you will need assistance from a professional WordPress developer who can check all the pages and fix their designs where needed. This process can take some time. It may take from a few hours to a few days or a few weeks depending on the size of your website.
#7 Check for broken links
After the data is imported and the designs of all web pages are fixed, you need to scan your new website for any broken links and fix those broken links. You may likely experience some broken links on your new website after exporting the data from the old website.
#8 Performance test
After testing for and fixing all the broken links on your new website, now it’s time to test the overall performance of your new website. The three major areas to check the performance of your new website are the website’s loading speed, browser compatibility, and responsiveness (mobile compatibility).
#9 Add the trackers
After testing your website thoroughly, you need to make sure that you migrate all the important tracking codes such as Google Analytics, Facebook Pixels, Conversion codes, etc. to your new website.
#10 Make live
The final step in the website redesign process is to make your website live replacing your old website.
#11 Test again
Even after making your new website live, you must check again the whole website for:
- Broken links
- Browser compatibility
- Device compatibility
- Loading speed
- Missing images or texts
